The course “Introduction to Medicine and History of Medicine” is a first-year compulsory course of
the Integrated Undergraduate and Graduate University Study of Medicine in English encompassing
24 hours of lectures and awarding 2 ECTS credits.
The course helps students gain insight into the laws of the gradual development of medicine as a
science and acquire basic professional terminology. The lectures cover:
- an introduction to medicine (medical terminology, the structure of the healthcare system
and formal medical higher education in the Republic of Croatia, the characteristics of a
good physician and medical student, etc.);
- an overview of the history of medicine from prehistoric times to the present;
- the most important chapters of the history of medicine and the Faculty of Medicine in
Rijeka

Regular class attendance (max 10 % of points), seminar paper (the topic is chosen from the offered list;
max 30 %), a midterm exam related to the „Introduction to Medicine“ (max 30 %) and the final written exam (max 30 %).
• the final exam is of written form; the exam lasts for 45 minutes and entails a multiple-choice test;
• in accordance with the general rules of the Faculty of Medicine, a minimum of 50 % of correct
answers is required to pass the exam;
• in order to be admitted to the final exam, the student has to gather at least 35 (50 %) of the total of
70 points before the final exam
